Electrical Requirements for HVAC Heat Kits

Electric resistance heat can represent one of the largest electrical loads in a home. Before installation, verify the complete electrical requirements rather than looking only at the nominal kW rating.

High-current equipment: Heat-kit installation involves line voltage and substantial electrical loads. Electrical requirements must be verified from the actual equipment documentation and applicable requirements.

Auxiliary Heat vs. Emergency Heat

These thermostat terms are related but do not mean exactly the same thing.

Auxiliary heat is supplemental heat that the system can call for automatically when additional heating capacity is needed. Emergency heat is typically a manually selected operating mode that uses the configured backup source instead of normal heat-pump compressor heating.

Frequent AUX heat? Very cold weather can increase auxiliary-heat use, but unusually frequent operation can also justify checking thermostat setup, heat-pump performance, airflow and system design.

Airflow & Electric Heat Safety

Air moving across the electric heating elements carries heat into the building. Restricted airflow can cause excessive temperatures and may activate equipment safety controls.

Common Electric Heat Problems

Breaker Trips

Electrical faults, heating-element problems, wiring issues or other equipment conditions can contribute to breaker operation.

Only Some Stages Heat

A multi-stage kit may have a failed element, relay, sequencer, control signal or circuit affecting part of its capacity.

Heat Runs Constantly

Thermostat setup, control faults, heat-pump performance, low outdoor temperature or system sizing may contribute.

High-Temperature Limit Opens

Restricted airflow, blower problems or other abnormal conditions can cause excessive temperature.

Burning Odor

A temporary heated-dust odor may occur after long inactivity, but persistent burning odor, smoke or abnormal operation requires service.
